Precision Soil Mapping Project Showcase

30th August 2018 @ 10:00 am - 4:30 pm

Precision Soil Mapping Project Showcase event

Agri-EPI Centre in conjunction with AgSpace, IPF, Cranfield University and James Hutton Institute warmly invite you to this event to showcase the Precision Soil Mapping Project and demonstrate how it can take precision farming to the next level. Come and join us to see how the consortium have worked together to create the Precision Soil Map and how it can lower the entry cost to precision farming making it more viable for a wider community.

Present your challenge

For this event, we introduce the ‘challenge pitch’ in the programme. You can sign up to give a 3-minute pitch to introduce your organisation and ask advice how best to tackle the soil related challenges you have. You can show your interest in the registration form.

Project summary

Dividing land into management zones according to soil characteristics has been proven to yield better results when compared to conventional farming. The perceived high entry cost into precision farming has long been a barrier to entry for some smaller arable farmers. The Precision Soil Mapping Project set out to make the financial entry into precision farming more affordable whilst not compromising on the high-resolution data required to produce meaningful soil management zones.

This large-scale collaborative project has aimed to integrate satellite data with the UK’s most comprehensive soil datasets to produce a ‘precision soil map’. The resultant map provides an economically viable alternative to the current labour-intensive methodology of soil surveying and represents a very exciting opportunity for arable and vegetable farming to embrace precision farming. Growers will be able to increase yields with lower input costs and reduced environmental impact.
