De Montfort UniversityDe Montfort University has developed OPTIcut, a cutting-edge web-based decision support system offering precision agriculture in the banana business. It uses state of the art artificial intelligence and 3D image processing algorithms providing optimized cutting strategies and fruit profiles tailored to each farm. Banana hands are cut into clusters for packing. This generates variable amounts of fruit waste depending on the cutting strategy used.

Cutting strategies are currently based on human experience and their number can be exponential. Therefore, there is a clear need to produce data driven optimized cutting strategies which can minimize waste and maximize profit. OPTIcut also offers producers the capacity to estimate the amount of fruit available in every farm (fruit profiles), per type of cut and to record fruit damage to make strategic decisions. We are currently looking for ways to promote OPTIcut and attract investors and funding opportunities.

NIAB is at the centre of innovation in crop science. Established in 1919 to assess the merits of varieties and seed quality, NIAB has grown in size, expanding its cropping and research expertise to the extent that it is now a major international research organisation in plant science, crop evaluation and agronomy.

With expertise in genetics and breeding, varieties and seeds and agronomy, NIAB works on a wide range of crops from cereals and oilseeds to potatoes, ornamentals, nonfood crops and top and soft fruit. We produce new genetic diversity in pre-breeding material for arable crops, as well as plant breeding services for the fruit sector.

NIAB is unique in being an independent science-based research organisation with a very large farmer and industry based membership who help to ensure that research outcomes are transferred into practice. NIAB also runs two incubator centres, Barn4, based in Cambridge and the Eastern AgriTech Innovation Hub near Soham. These provide start-ups and SMEs with facilities and the opportunity to interact directly with NIAB.

Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS)

The Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) is Scotland’s largest and oldest independent marine science organisation, delivering marine science for a productive and sustainably managed marine environment through innovative research, education and engagement with society.

Based near Oban on the Scottish west coast, our marine research and teaching portfolio is diverse in topic and discipline, global in outlook, project locations and relevance, and delivered by a SAMS team with can-do attitude working in partnership with academic, business, government, regulatory, voluntary and civic society colleagues.

SAMS is a charitable organisation (SC009206) with a membership that elects the Board members following a recruitment process. The Smart Wireless Innovation Facility (SWIFt) is a commercial IOT and 5G test bed facility available to SME’s, scale ups, larger organisations, and academic institutions. To support and accelerate the development and adoption of digital technology and wireless networks-based solutions.

Research at the Bristol Vet School (BVS) addresses 21st century answers to questions of animal health, resilience, welfare and disease. Researchers access the most appropriate, leading-edge technologies to investigate fundamental and applied research questions and employ optimal pathways to impact. The goals of their research are to improve the immediate and future health of human and animal populations by:

· increasing sustainable production of healthy, high-welfare food while supporting recovery of endangered environmental resources;
· ensuring sustainable use of medicines in human and animal populations;
· reducing the impact of bacterial, viral and parasitic zoonotic diseases on human and animal populations; and
· translating new developments across fundamental research in human and animal medicine into management and therapeutic approaches which enhance the quality of life of animals and humans.

Their research is strengthened by the overlap between these four goals and by the need to engage multiple disciplines to address these important questions.

Aqua Innovation LogoAqua Innovation Ltd (AI) is a business specialising in the design and development of innovative solutions for the salmon farming industry. 

Our objective is to give farmers the best environment to grow their fish. We have detailed knowledge and understanding of the aquaculture sector and the challenges faced by fish farmers including  fish welfare and regulatory/environmental issues. 

Through this we aim to find innovative solutions to combat these issues resulting in the opportunity to drive the growth of the sector forward. 

AI are currently developing two separate systems with the aim of tackling waste management issues in the industry:  

  • A waste capture system able to be retro-fitted to existing salmon pens which will capture the waste (primarily food waste and faeces) as it drops out of the water column. 
  • A floating concrete contained aquaculture pen (Sea CAP) for growing salmon smolts up to harvest weight in a controlled environment.

B-Hive Innovations are a high-growth, innovative R&D company in the AgriTech sector. They also have experience and expertise in valorisation of waste streams from the fresh produce industry.

B-Hive has a focus on innovation that results directly in the generation of new products or services and sets them aside from academic institutions. Their cross-disciplinary team includes plant biologists, robotic engineers, image acquisition and processing experts as well as computer scientists who provide software solutions and artificial intelligence to integrate data with phenotype. Notable success stories include Harvest Eye and Root Extracts, spin out companies created to commercialise their research. Harvest Eye is an innovative camera system that sizes and shapes every single tuber during potato harvesting, giving the farmer significant insights into yield and quality. Harvest Eye can also be applied to other crops. Root Extracts represents technology to extract protein, at scale, and other molecules from fresh produce waste.

We are a start-up business working in the carbon capture and agricultural sector, currently in the R & D phase of developing a patentable process for the manufacture of a carbon negative biological fertiliser to replace synthetic fertiliser.

BioFactoryBath-based design and engineering business providing innovative waste-to-energy solutions.  We deliver affordable container-based micro-scale AD solutions for smaller farms that process cow slurries into upgraded bio-fertilisers and on-site power.

Salinity Solutions Ltd is a new water treatment company commercialising a unique method of reverse osmosis desalination. Salinity Solutions have recently completed field trials with Cornish Lithium and are pleased to announce that the results have been very encouraging. The unit was able to concentrate Cornish Lithium’s brine by over five times concentration.

The company is owned and managed by 18 growers, the majority in Angus, Perthshire and Fife, who grow a variety of fruits and other crops; we market their strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries and cherries. They specialise in producing fresh fruit for the major supermarkets, shops, restaurants and food and drinks manufacturers.

Bardsley EnglandAt present, Bardsley England grows 23k tonnes of fruit annually from 24 sites across 820ha of land which stands the business as one of the largest top fruit producers in the UK. The growing side is just one of the compliments of this group; a state of the art packhouse handles 35,000 tonnes of fruit per year. With the two businesses combined to bring a vertically integrated supply chain to customers, the key focus has become sustainability, environment and eliminating food waste, which is why they have turned their full attention to Ag Tech and applying it to their business. Developing an onsite, fully incubated Ag Tech arm within Bardsley England will enable to group to tackle some huge ambitions in paving the way for automated, regenerative agriculture. With the implementation of digital receptors, they will create feedback loops in order to generate intelligence. It is this intelligence which will aid the elimination of uncertainty within agriculture and in turn not only enable growers to produce fruit more efficiently but deliver a more nutritious product to the consumer.

Borders Estate Farm BuccleuchBorders Estate was formed in September 2018 following the merger of the Eskdale & Liddesdale and Bowhill Estates. Kaiapoi Farming‘Kaiapoi’ is Maori meaning ‘food over water’. We have imported Romney Rams from New Zealand to create the ultimate outdoor lambing ewe for the UK climate.

Rob and Jo Hodgkins set up Kaiapoi in 2013 with 200 ewes on 60 rented acres of grass. They have driven the business forward hard and now run 2250 ewes across 1000ac semi improved grassland and solar panels and farm 1600ac of arable crops around North Hertfordshire.

Kettle ProduceKettle Produce Ltd was established in 1985 by two farming families from Fife, Scotland. They have a vast experience in vegetable production and have been growing in partnership since 1976.

There are now over 50 farmers growing in partnership with Kettle Produce Ltd. They supply a range of products that support the four main categories of the business. They are roots, Brassicas, salads and prepared vegetables.

The supply of vegetables from Kettle Produce Ltd isn’t confined to Scotland. In 2003, Kettle Produce Espána SL was formed as a joint venture based in Murcia, Spain. There are also several strategic supply partnerships with major growers in England, France, Spain and Portugal. In total, there are over 6,000 hectares of crops grown across the UK and Continental Europe.

Kettle Produce Ltd has two main sites of production, Balmalcolm and Orkie which are located two miles apart. The Balmalcolm site operations include Brassicas, salads and prepared vegetables and is also the centre for the administrative function. The Orkie site incorporates all root washing, grading and packing.

The end-product is a nitrogen enriched organic fertiliser (NEO), which has the same characteristics as normal slurry, but contains more nitrogen and significantly less emissions.
