Pork is a sizeable market-sector in the EU but export markets such as Asia are large and growing. To stay competitive, farming in the EU must become more environmentally sustainable and reflect upon consumers who are more conscious of their food sources. EIT Food and the European Commission co-funded a project to commercialise Pig Tracker; a state-of-the-art, integrated solution using innovative on-farm technologies combined with a decision support platform to improve productivity, profitability, animal welfare and reduce emissions.
As part of this project, a number of outputs were produced which can be of benefit to students and practitioners of sustainable pork production and the role and potential of smart pig farming in this endeavour. Educational material developed by the University of Warsaw, a review of pig recording software performed by Agri-EPI Centre and a webinar/online workshop on smart pig farming can be downloaded here.
Discussing the need for smart farming in pigs, the benefits for transparency, sustainability & productivity as well as the state of the art and current limitations leading to the perfect solution.
